Harpenden Rovers made it three wins and a draw from their opening four league games with a thoroughly professional away performance at Shefford Saints Greens, a George O'Connor hat-trick doing the bulk of the damage in a comfortable 5-1 win that keeps the side top of Division 4.
Rovers were ahead inside five minutes, Yunus fouled 22 yards out in the centre of the pitch setting up a James Haunch free-kick that curled towards the left corner — the Shefford keeper got a hand to it, but couldn't keep it out. It set the tone for an afternoon of relentless pressure.
The second, on 10 minutes, was the pick of the team moves: Haunch and James Fraser won the ball back high up the pitch, Haunch released Will Barnes down the left, and a good ball into the box found Lucas Kirk, who squared unselfishly for Yunus Chowdhury to finish into the bottom-left corner.
O'Connor's afternoon began in earnest on 25 minutes, latching onto good work from Haunch and Kirk down the right — Kirk breaking into the box and squaring for O'Connor to finish into the left corner, making it 3-0 at the break. The Rovers forward doubled his tally shortly after the restart, bursting into the box, having his shirt pulled and then pushed off the ball, and making no mistake from the resulting penalty, powering his effort into the top right corner to make it 4-0.
Shefford pulled one back on 65 minutes with a well-worked goal through the middle, beating the onrushing Tim Watson, but it did little to interrupt the visitors' control of the game. Three minutes later, Rovers thought they had a second penalty when George Potter was clearly fouled bursting into the box — Potter's own spot-kick beat the keeper to his left, only for the referee to rule it out, adjudging a double touch on the strike that was visible to nobody else watching, including on video replay. Under the laws of the game, that call should have led to a retake rather than a free-kick to the opposition — a harsh moment, though not one that troubled the final outcome.
Rovers had the last word two minutes later. James Fraser's good work through midfield released George Potter — who had moved forward into the No.10 role after a commanding first-half shift at centre-back — and Potter played a perfectly weighted ball into the right side of the box for O'Connor to burst onto and finish inside the near post with his left foot — a hat-trick, and a fitting end to a dominant away display. Potter's all-round display across both positions, capped by that assist, saw him take the player-of-the-match award.
