Harpenden Rovers' U15s put on a scoring masterclass in the sunshine on Saturday, hitting nine past a battling Stotfold Junior Whites side to open their campaign in emphatic fashion.

A Luke Robinson hat-trick, two apiece from George O'Connor and James Fraser, and a first senior goal for defender Tom Hunt on his half-century appearance told the story of a Rovers side purring in every third of the pitch, even if two Stotfold replies were a reminder the visitors never stopped competing.

Rovers were up and running inside two minutes. A Robinson free-kick, floated in from just inside the Stotfold half, fell to Lucas Kirk, who played it through into the path of James Fraser, who made no mistake with his right foot. Six minutes later it was 2-0, George O'Connor pouncing on a loose touch from a Stotfold goal kick to slot home left-footed.

Stotfold hit back on 17 minutes with a goal that belied the scoreline — a rapid counter ended with their centre-forward controlling well on the edge of the box and drilling a shot beyond Tim Watson into the far top corner. But Rovers' response was swift. Robinson, teed up by Yunus Chowdhury just outside the box, curled a crisp finish into the corner to restore the two-goal cushion, and Rovers went in 3-1 up at the break.

Chowdhury himself got in on the act early in the second half, finishing off a fine Benji Searing long ball to make it 4-1. Any hope of a Stotfold fightback evaporated soon after. Robinson struck again, ghosting past two defenders on a Marco Kiedycz pass before slotting home, and four minutes later came the goal of the game — arguably the best team move of the season so far. James Haunch won the ball back with a determined press, combined in a one-two with Will Barnes, and released George O'Connor, who had drifted out to the right wing from his centre-forward berth. O'Connor beat his man on the halfway line, drove to the edge of the box, and — showing real unselfishness for a striker — laid on a perfectly weighted pass to the back post, where Fraser arrived on a fine run to finish left-footed for his second of the afternoon.

George O'Connor added his second, and Rovers' seventh, on 60 minutes, driving a powerful finish beyond the keeper after good work from Robinson.

The game's most heart-warming moment came on 64 minutes. With a Stotfold defender content to let the ball trickle out for a goal kick, Robinson refused to give up the chase, won it back on the byline, and squared for Tom Hunt to smash home first time. It was Hunt's first goal in Rovers colours — arriving in his 50th appearance for the club, the longest wait for an opener in the club's history.

Stotfold were awarded a penalty on 68 minutes, converted after Ridhahussein Kanji was penalised for a challenge on their forward, but it did little more than take the shine off the scoreline. Robinson completed his hat-trick in style four minutes later, curling a 24-yard effort into the top corner to make it 9-2 and put the finishing touch to an emphatic performance. There were pleasing performances too from the two new faces in the squad: Xander Catto and Ridhahussein Kanji both impressed on their first competitive outings — Kanji's arriving after a single trial appearance at the tail end of last season — despite the latter's mix-up leading to Stotfold's penalty.
